The Hurtwood Physio

Hiya, my name is Emma. I’m a fully qualified MSK physio based in the Surrey Hills.

Before setting up The Hurtwood Physio, I worked in clinical settings and Professional/ Olympic level sport. I’ve combined these experiences to create a physio practice that gets real results. Working with you to create bespoke programmes which are focused on your journey and what you want to achieve. This means, I spend time to properly get to know you, stepping back and looking at the big picture to get sustainable results.

When I’m not treating people, you’ll find me chasing around my little boy or out exploring the Surrey Hills, either running or on a bike.

About Emma

I graduated from the University of East Anglia in 2014. Which was followed by 2 years working in Musculoskeletal outpatients before completing my MSc in Sports Rehabilitation alongside working with British swimming and the English institute of Sport. During this time, I led research based on shoulder pain in swimmers, which was published in the Shoulder and Elbow Journal 2018.

I’ve had an awesome time working with athletes from various Olympic sports teams within the English Institute of sport. I spent a year with British Triathlon working with both the Junior elite triathletes across England and World class program athletes based in Bath. Being based with the British Triathlon team gave me the triathlon bug and I’ve since won the London Olympic Triathlon for my age group and completed a half ironman in Mallorca in 2018 with goal of completing a full ironman when my little ones are bit older.

I also worked full time with the British Sailing team in the lead up to the Olympic games in Tokyo, traveling internationally for both training camps and competition. During 2020 I decided to step off the rat race of professional sport in the chaos of the Covid pandemic. After working in a couple of places I decided to combine my experience and set up my own Physio practice in my home - the Surrey Hills.

I love working with people who are passionate about moving their body. My specialist area is working with people to either prevent injury or the journey back to sport after injury.

Physiotherapy

You’ll likely already have an idea of what physio is, but in a nutshell it helps restore movement and function when someone has been affected by injury, illness or disability.

As an MSK physio I specialise in treating injuries and conditions which affect the muscles, joints and soft tissue. I regularly work in partnership with consultants and wider medical teams to get the best results.

These can include:

  • Low back pain (sciatica, nerve pain, postural related pain)

  • Neck pain

  • Ligament sprains

  • Shoulder pain

  • Muscle strains

  • Arthritis

  • Pre and post surgery rehabilitation

  • Fracture rehabilitation

To get the best results I need to get to know you to develop relevant goals based on returning to pre injury function and what you want to achieve long term. This includes carrying out a bespoke assessment  to ensure we can diagnose which structures are involved and develop an appropriate individualised rehabilitation plan.

This might include:

  • Exercise therapy

  • Massage therapy

  • Manual therapy

  • Self management techniques

Examples of sports injuries:

  • Ankle pain/ Sprained ankles

  • Knee ligament injuries

  • Fractures

  • Shin splints

  • 'Runners knee'

  • Shoulder pain (Rotator cuff injury, Shoulder instability, 'Swimmers shoulder')

  • Foot pain (plantar fasciitis/ heel pain)

  • Concussion
